Overview

In March 2023, after 18 months of dedicated preparation, I was honored to join Aethra Learning Center and the Tanoto Foundation as a mentor for the Teladan Scholars 2023 cohort. My journey began with an intensive three-day mentor training workshop in Jakarta, where I gained critical coaching techniques, learned to facilitate growth experiences, and aligned with program values and objectives.

As an Official Mentor (also known as an “Assistant Guardian Angel”), my mission was to guide a small cohort of emerging scholars over the course of the program. I provided ongoing support through one-on-one conversations, group activities, reflective sessions, and motivational check-ins, all tailored to help each mentee identify strengths, define development goals, and overcome challenges. Witnessing their personal and leadership growth throughout this journey was deeply rewarding, and I remain immensely grateful to the Tanoto Foundation and Aethra Learning Center for entrusting me with this transformative role.

Findings

This mentorship experience offered profound insights into leadership, education, and the power of intentional guidance:

  1. Preparation Matters
The 18-month execution, combining self-reflection, learning from past leadership and volunteer roles, and mentoring theory, helped me mentor with deeper empathy, clarity, and confidence.

  2. Structured Training Makes a Difference
The initial three-day Jakarta training equipped me with proven mentoring frameworks, active listening strategies, and developmental feedback techniques, ensuring I could support mentees effectively from day one.

  3. Adaptable Coaching Strategies
Working with mentees of different backgrounds and learning styles taught me to customize my approach, whether by offering practical tools, emotional encouragement, or skills-based advice.

  4. Holistic Impact
Beyond academic performance, I saw mentees grow in confidence, self-awareness, and leadership skills. Simple practices, like guided reflection, strengths-based coaching, or peer learning, yielded powerful personal breakthroughs.

  5. The Joy of Witnessing Transformation
It was deeply fulfilling to see small shifts, like speaking up more, trying new study techniques, and stepping into leadership roles. These moments underscored the power of mentorship in unlocking human potential.

  6. Community Through Trust and Vulnerability
The mentor–mentee relationship thrived on trust. By creating safe spaces for honest sharing, I helped foster meaningful bonds, not just between myself and mentees, but among the cohort members themselves.
