Overview

Building upon the insights from the LeadSelf program, I took the next step in my leadership journey by moving into the Lead Others phase in collaboration with Ecoxyztem. Together with five peers, Gregor Dalton, Laurencia Otniel Sukamto, Naufal Abdillah, Nataati Putih Widatama, and Afifa Qirandha Suhardi, we founded an organization called Streamliners. Our mission: to design a clear, practical curriculum for elementary school teachers focused on waste sorting and sustainable habits, in partnership with Guru Bumi, Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Yogyakarta, Walhi Yogyakarta, and Rapel.

Our flagship initiative was launched at SDN Jetis 1, Yogyakarta, where our team introduced a sustainable waste management program with measurable results. By integrating interactive workshops, fun educational activities, and comprehensive community outreach, we empowered:

  • Students to learn and practice waste segregation and recycling daily,

  • Teachers and staff to integrate environmental stewardship into school routines,

  • The broader school community to take pride and responsibility in maintaining a cleaner campus.

Findings

Our experience through Streamliners provided invaluable lessons in child-centered education, community partnership, and scalable change:

  • Pedagogical Impact: The curriculum we co-created, with hands-on sorting games, visual guides, and classroom challenges, proved highly engaging and effective in helping young learners adopt sustainable habits.

  • Community Engagement: We saw increased participation not just from students, but from teachers and parents as well. This collective involvement fostered a genuine sense of ownership and responsibility toward environmental sustainability.

  • Measurable Outcomes: SDN Jetis 1 experienced a noticeable reduction in non-recyclable waste, thanks to consistent practice of waste segregation. More importantly, the program instilled lasting behavioral change in the school culture.

  • Replication & Scalability: The success of our model in Yogyakarta provided us with a framework to expand the initiative to other schools. By documenting our curriculum and collecting feedback, we created a template that can be adapted to new environments.

  • Collaboration as Strength: Working alongside Ruang Guru enhanced our reach and credibility. It reinforced that strategic partnerships are essential to drive meaningful, systemic educational change.
