Overview

As a member of the Elins Research Club (ERC) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, I served as a staff member in two key divisions: Aeromodelling and Website Development. Being part of ERC allowed me to grow in both technical and organizational capacities while contributing to the club’s mission of fostering research and innovation among students of Electronics and Instrumentation.

In the Aeromodelling division, I engaged in the design, development, and control systems of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This role sharpened my understanding of aerodynamics, embedded systems, and teamwork under a project-based learning environment.

Simultaneously, I took an active role in the Website Development division, where I was both a frontend developer and project manager for a significant initiative: Actuary Academy, a Learning Management System (LMS) platform designed to support self-paced learning for students in fields such as data science, statistics, and financial modeling. I led the development of the user interface using modern frontend technologies and collaborated closely with back-end developers, designers, and content creators to ensure the platform’s functionality, accessibility, and user experience were optimized.

Findings

From my dual roles in ERC, I gained multidimensional insights and skills across both hardware-based and software-based projects.

In Aeromodelling, I discovered how theory can be translated into tangible, working prototypes through iterative testing and refinement. I also learned the value of precision, patience, and collaboration in developing flight-capable systems, especially when working with sensors, microcontrollers, and real-time data.

In the Website Development track, I experienced the complexity of managing a full product lifecycle, from ideation and planning to development and deployment. Leading the Actuary Academy project taught me how to balance technical execution with team coordination. I developed not only my technical front-end development skills (such as UI/UX design and component structuring) but also leadership abilities in project scoping, time management, and communication.

This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability, interdisciplinary thinking, and initiative. Whether in a highly technical aeromodelling project or in a software platform meant to serve a learning community, I found that clarity of purpose, collaboration, and continuous learning are the key drivers of meaningful innovation.
