Overview

In November 2021, I had the opportunity to volunteer with PMK MIPA UGM (Persekutuan Mahasiswa Kristen) for a community outreach program at an orphanage in Yogyakarta. As a member of the equipment division, my role involved preparing and managing logistical needs to ensure the event ran smoothly. More importantly, I helped create a warm, engaging, and joyful environment for the children we visited.

Throughout the day, we organized interactive activities, shared stories, and simply spent time with the children,laughing, playing, and listening. Witnessing their happiness and openness reminded me of the power of presence and connection. Even the simplest gestures,a smile, a kind word, a shared game,carried deep meaning.

Findings

This volunteering experience deeply shaped my perspective on empathy, service, and community engagement. I learned that impactful change doesn’t always require grand gestures; often, it's the small, sincere efforts that leave lasting impressions. Being part of the equipment team also helped me understand the importance of behind-the-scenes support in making an event meaningful and successful.

I also realized how essential it is to actively give back to the community and to engage with people beyond academic or professional circles. The children reminded me to appreciate life’s simple joys and to remain grounded in compassion.

Above all, this experience reinforced a value I carry forward in everything I do: service rooted in humility and love can uplift others,and ourselves,in unexpected ways.
